With the propery prices in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai on an all-time low, it’s the best time for home-buyers to buy a house. However, the monsoons in Mumbai are here and house-hunting in the rains is no mean feat. On the other hand, the rains help you get a clear perspective on the locality as well as the construction, making it an invaluable experience. So, here are some tips for those planning to go house hunting /home buying in Mumbai this monsoon.
Dress comfortably
House hunting in Mumbai rains is a tedious task and you simply need to be dressed comfortably. A pair of shorts/capris with a T-shirt is a good option. Rainy footwear is a must as you wouldn’t like to ruin your fancy shoes in the mud. Gumboots are great if you are going to visit under construction buildings as the mud can get into your toes. Likewise, it’s easier to walk wearing a raincoat than struggling with an umbrella.

Travel smart
If you are traveling by car, make sure that the building is accessible by a proper road or not. Many construction sites in Navi Mumbai are don’t have proper roads and you’ll be in a mess if your car gets stuck out there. So, always park in a safe place. In case, you decide to travel by public transport make sure whether there is an auto rickshaw stand/bus stop close to the construction site or else you might be stranded in the middle of nowhere. Also check whether the locality is prone to flooding or not.
Carry the essentials
You will need to stock yourself if you plan a day of house hunting in the Mumbai monsoons. It’s advisable to carry a backpack as it’s inconvenient to travel with a hand bag. Keep enough water, biscuits, dry fruits and other munchies with you. Also keep things like towel/tissues, antiseptic, emergency contact numbers, etc with you.
Start early in the day
So, if you had planned to start at 12 noon, make it a couple of hours earlier. This will give you enough buffer time as you can see flats at leisure. You can also finish quickly and be home in the evenings. It’s better to keep the sample flat visits in the day as you won’t get a clear picture of the area in the evenings, especially in the monsoons.
Carry documents in a folder
That’s only if you must carry them. For good measure, put them in folders. It’s better to carry Xerox copies if it’s only for reference purpose. Also keep a couple of bags to stack all the brochures you will be collecting in your visits.
Don’t be over-ambitious
If you are going with your family on a house-hunting spree in Mumbai/Navi Mumbai, stick to flats in a particular locality only. Your spouse and kids won’t be too kicked about seeing 10 different houses in various areas. You can ask the builder if he is going to make transport arrangements for you. This can save you a lot of trouble.
So get advantage of the low property prices in Navi Mumbai and get ready for your home hunting in this monsoon!
